Watching your hair become thinner can be frustrating and deeply personal. You may notice more hair in the shower, a widening part, a receding hairline, or areas of your scalp becoming increasingly visible. While hair loss is common for both men and women, that does not mean you have to ignore it.
At West Coast Integrative Wellness Center in Fort Myers, we offer microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) as a nonsurgical option for certain types of hair thinning. The treatment uses components from your own blood to support existing follicles and create a healthier environment for hair growth.
How Does PRP Hair Restoration Work?
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. Platelets are best known for helping your blood clot, but they also contain growth factors involved in tissue repair and cellular activity.
To prepare PRP, we draw a small amount of your blood and place it in a centrifuge. The centrifuge separates the platelet-rich plasma from the other blood components, producing a concentrated solution for treatment.
At our Fort Myers office, Dr. Jason Kaster combines PRP with scalp microneedling. A specialized device creates tiny, controlled channels in the targeted areas of the scalp. This process stimulates a natural healing response and helps the PRP reach the areas surrounding weakened hair follicles.
PRP hair restoration is intended to support follicles that are still present but have become weaker or less active. It cannot create entirely new follicles in an area where they are no longer viable.
Who Is a Good Candidate for PRP Hair Restoration?
PRP tends to be most appropriate for people experiencing early or moderate thinning rather than complete baldness. You may be a potential candidate if you have:
- Male or female pattern hair loss
- A widening part or receding hairline
- Increased shedding
- Thinner, weaker, or miniaturized hair
- Areas where hair is still present but has lost density
- Realistic expectations about gradual improvement
People in the earlier stages of androgenetic alopecia—commonly called male or female pattern hair loss—may respond more favorably because they generally have more functioning follicles available to stimulate.
PRP may be considered for both men and women. However, your candidacy depends on more than your age or the amount of hair you have lost. Your overall health, medications, scalp condition, type of hair loss, and treatment goals must also be considered.
When Might PRP Not Be the Right Treatment?
Not every form of hair loss responds to PRP. Advanced baldness, extensive scarring of the scalp, or conditions in which follicles have been permanently destroyed may require a different approach.
Sudden or unexplained shedding can also be related to an underlying issue, such as hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid conditions, illness, significant stress, or certain medications. In these situations, determining and addressing the underlying cause should be a priority.
Some blood disorders, active infections, medical conditions, and medications may also affect whether PRP is appropriate. During your consultation at West Coast Integrative Wellness Center, we will review your health history and hair-loss pattern before recommending treatment. When necessary, we may suggest additional medical evaluation.
What Happens During a PRP Hair Treatment?
Your visit begins with a consultation and assessment of your hair loss. If you are a candidate, we will create a treatment plan based on the affected areas and your goals.
During treatment:
- A small amount of blood is drawn from your arm.
- The blood is processed in a centrifuge to isolate the PRP.
- A topical numbing product may be applied to improve comfort.
- A microneedling device is used on the treatment area.
- The prepared PRP is applied to the targeted areas of your scalp.
You may feel pressure, vibration, or mild sensitivity during the procedure. The length of the appointment can vary depending on the size of the treatment area.
What Is Recovery Like?
One benefit of microneedling with PRP is that it requires relatively little downtime. Your scalp may look red or feel tender following treatment. Mild swelling, tightness, or pinpoint sensitivity can also occur, but these effects are generally temporary.
We will give you specific aftercare instructions. You may need to avoid vigorous exercise, direct sun exposure, swimming, harsh hair products, and washing or styling the treated area for a designated period.
Because PRP initiates a gradual biological response, you should not expect to leave the office with immediately thicker hair. Changes may develop over several months as the hair progresses through its natural growth cycle.
How Many PRP Sessions Will You Need?
Hair restoration is typically performed as a series rather than a single treatment. The number and frequency of your appointments will depend on your degree of thinning, scalp health, response to treatment, and long-term goals.
Some patients may also benefit from periodic maintenance sessions. Results vary, and PRP cannot guarantee complete regrowth or the same outcome for every patient. During follow-up visits, we can evaluate changes in shedding, coverage, density, and hair quality to determine whether your plan should be continued or adjusted.
