How is YOUR posture?
“Sit up Straight!” You heard it from your parents for your entire life. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even teachers. As a kid, you think “Geeze, enough already”. As an adult you grow to appreciate the reminder because slouching, over time, can cause numerous back, neck, and other health issues.
Great posture makes you look taller, healthier, and more confident, yet it is something most of us are rarely aware of.
If you are reading this it is likely you are sitting right now. Without moving stop. Look down. Are your shoulders rolled forward? Is your mid back hunching outward? Is your head drooping forward putting extra weight on your neck?
If you answered yes to all or any of those questions, it’s time to become more aware of how you sit.
Place your feet flat on the floor knees a comfortable natural space apart. Allow your weight to distribute evenly so that you are balanced on your mid thighs and sit bones. Bring your shoulders back and chin up. If you are working at a desk, make sure that the chair is the right height for the desk. Your arms when typing, should rest comfortably on the desk. Not dropped down and not angled upwards.
The same ideas apply when you are standing. Stand up straight and tall, shoulders back, head held high.
Take breaks often. Stand, stretch, and go for a walk. If you are used to slouching it means you have weak muscles in the back and neck and even down into your glutes. When beginning to sit correctly, believe it or not, it is like adding a new exercise to your routine. Your muscles may become sore. Give it time and your body will adjust and happily.
Over time bad posture will misalign your spine and form it incorrectly. This can lead to:
- Back pain
- Poor sleep quality
- Lack of energy and motivation
- Neck pain
