I think we can all agree the holidays are not the same this year. Still, many of us choose to keep as much normalcy as possible so this is still a time filled with festivities. Shopping, decorating, spending time with close loved ones and friends yet keeping our circles smaller than usual.
There is still a lot of holiday pressure – gift lists, presents, phone calls, cards to send, there is pressure to be joyous in a stress filled society. It can push you out of your comfort zone and cause more stress. This pushes your body to keep up.
Because of added pressure people often reexperience flare ups from older injuries. This is on top of new things that may happen just during daily life.
We wanted to jump in and give you some tips to help you avoid back strain and pain this Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s.
Always use proper posture. This goes for hanging lights and climbing ladders or standing on step stools, we even have patients that crawl on their counters. Just please be careful.
When lifting heavy boxes remember to bend at the knees and lift with your legs, not your back. Ask for help if its too bulky or heavy.
If you begin to feel exhausted. Stop. Most injuries happen when you are over exerted.
While travel is down this year. There are still many headed to the airport or cramped for long drives. All of this sitting and hauling luggage can tweak your neck or back easily. Makes sure to listen to your body. Stretch when you need to and shift, even if its getting up to use the air plane rest room, a short walk is better than none.
Online or at the mall, shopping with a list of people in mind can be tiring and stressful. Wear comfy shoes at the mall that are good for all day walking. Don’t rush and stop and eat something if you are hungry. The best present you can give anyone is your happy healthy presence.
If you are shopping online don’t get so engrossed you forget to get up and move. Sitting at a computer for hours is hard on our body as well. Slouching, wrist cramps, back pain, neck pain, and tight hamstrings and sore glutes can easily be the outcome. Stretch hourly.
Drive Extra Carefully
While the number of cars on the road is still lower than usual people are stressed out and distracted. Please keep your eyes on the road and drive defensively. While we pride ourselves on accident care, we prefer you never get into an accident to start with.
