A Look at the Causes of Upper Back Pain

Sometimes the cause of back pain is easy to find. It may be due to an accident or injury but other times it may come on slowly and be harder to trace to the root.

Poor posture over time can lead to back muscle elongation and weakening. This makes them more susceptible to fatigue and pain. When the back is overused or overworked and put through more than it can handle ligament and muscle strains can occur. Joints may even sustain damage.

Impacts can also cause injury to the spine and surrounding soft muscle tissue. This can happen through hits, falls, bumps, and auto accidents. If upper back pain occurs following a fall or accident it is vital to seek medical attention immediately.

It may be wise to go to the ER to rule out any broken bones, but then please proceed to your chiropractor for care that will help allow your body to be put back in proper alignment so that healing can take place.

Other causes of upper back pain may include:

  • Compression fractures – Weakening of the vertebral bones can lead to microfractures in the spine. This condition is most common in older adults.
  • Herniated Discs – Sometimes a disc (shock absorber) will break down and herniate. This causes leakage of inflammatory proteins that cause pain.
  • Osteoarthritis – A lifetime of wear and tear can lead to osteoarthritis. This involves the breakdown and wearing away of protective cartilage leaving bone-on-bone movement which can be incredibly painful. This causes inflammation as well as bony overgrowths.

Infections or tumors may also be valid causes of upper back pain.
