With most of the country in a self-imposed quarantine, gyms are closed and people are not going to work. This can lead us to an overly relaxed physical state. Being too sedentary can lead to health issues, stiffness, obesity, and loss of muscle mass.
Get up, Get Out, and Move!
Just because you can’t go to the gym doesn’t mean that you have to stop being physically fit. Go outside in the fresh air and sunshine and go for a walk or jog. Fill water jugs and use them for weights, grab some concrete blocks and work out with those, dig out that old exercise bike buried in the garage, literally anything that will keep you moving is positive.
There are tons of videos on YouTube that you can easily do at home. Cardiovascular workouts, yoga, stretching, you name it.
Elevating your heart rate and bending and stretching your body will keep you limber and in far better shape than becoming a couch-bound potato for a few weeks. Muscle wasting is a real thing. When people lay in hospital beds when they finally get up again to move they are far weaker than before. Building muscle takes a lot more work than maintaining it.
So do whatever you can do, even if it’s just 15 minutes a day – it is good for you.
Physical exercise also releases endorphins so if you are getting stressed out watching the constant barrage of news updates (like the rest of us) working out can help you cope and maintain not only the physical but the mental and emotional balance as well.
Doing this outside also increases and boosts immunity. Sunshine allows your body to make Vitamin D which plays a big role in how well you are able to fight off foreign invaders like viral infections and bacteria.
Movement is vital to health so put that movie on pause and go outside for a while. Netflix will still be there when you get back.
