The Gratitude and Health Connection

The truth is that most of us don’t think too much about our health unless something is in question or we don’t feel well.

Anyone who is ill or in pain will tell you that the true wealth is health. If you are sick, no amount of money in the world makes any difference, all you want is to feel better again.

Attitude and belief can lead to either sickness or health. While this is a very in-depth topic essentially you get what you focus on most of the time. We know its easy to sit back and say “be grateful” for all of the good things in your world, and that is difficult when you don’t feel well or worse are in pain. But just the simple act of writing out a gratitude list daily can help you feel a little better.

According to Professor of Psychology at UC Davis, Dr. Robert A. Emmons, “Clinical trials indicate that the practice of gratitude can have dramatic and lasting effects in a person’s life. It can lower blood pressure, improve immune function and facilitate more efficient sleep.”

Other studies have found that people who actively practice gratitude, who focus on what they are thankful for, show appreciation to others and even write thank you notes, showed markedly better heart health, less brain aging and lower cortisol levels.

Why it works

Your body manifests physically through emotion. The way you perceive life can affect your immune system, your endocrine system, and have numerous physical benefits or detriments. While it is unreasonable to expect everyone to be happy and cheery all of the time, choosing to see things in a more positive light and keeping a sense of humor about you is to your benefit mentally and physically and can benefit not only yourself but all of those around you.

So no matter what state you are currently in, grab a pen and some paper. Take just 10 minutes out of your busy day and write down anything at all that makes you smile, makes you happy or just makes you feel even the slightest bit better. You may be surprised at the results.
