Hand Sanitizer – Is it Helping or Harming You?

With the Coronavirus / COVID-19 outbreak still looming as it has for the past few months more and more of us have been making sure to properly wash our hands as well as use hand sanitizer when we are out and about and unable to get to a sink with soap.

While this sounds on the surface like a very positive thing to do, it pays to do your due diligence when it comes to purchasing hand sanitizer. One size fits all they are not.

Things to note:

Sanitizers do have expiration dates. This is because alcohol-based blends tend to evaporate over time.

It should always be alcohol based.

Always store in a cool place away from heat.

Know that no sanitizer can eliminate all germs.

Alcohol concentration of 60% to 95% are most effective.

Washing your hands with soap and water is just as effective as using hand sanitizer, if not more so. Soap and water are more effective than hand sanitizers at removing certain kinds of germs, like Cryptosporidium, norovirus, and Clostridium difficile1-5. Alcohol hand sanitizers can kill many microbes effectively when used correctly 1-15, people may not use a large enough volume of the sanitizers or may wipe it off before it has dried 14.

Buy ONLY alcohol based sanitizers.

Hand sanitizers may not remove harmful chemicals such as heavy metals or pesticides if you come in contact. They are intended for microbes and germs only.

MOST IMPORTANT TIP: DO NOT BUY any bottle that lists Triclosan as an ingredient! This has been found to be a dangerous endocrine system disruptor. Please check your bottles. If you find one containing Triclosan as an ingredient throw it away.

Repeated use of alcohol on your hands when combined with repeated soapy hand washing can easily lead to dried out skin. Not only is this uncomfortable it can also lead to cracking. Cracks are minute breaks in the skins protective surface which can more easily allow invaders in. Make sure to continually moisturize your skin as well as disinfect.

Adding a good probiotic to your diet as well during this time is a good idea to help boost your immune system and keep it running strong. Along with that make sure to get plenty of fresh air and sunshine so your body can make Vitamin D. Supplement with fresh fruits containing Vitamin C for the best all around protective effect.
