Sports Injury Medicine – Treatment and Prevention Tips

Love sports? We do too. Sports provide great exercise and wellness opportunities for the body, mind, and soul. Fresh air, friends, and movement. With sports though comes the risk of injury. This can be to the strain of overuse or a collision or fall.

Injuries can be created by being out of shape and pushing too hard, wearing or using gear improperly, or simply by accident.

The most common sports injuries we see are:

  • Knee Injuries
  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Swollen Muscles
  • Fracture
  • Dislocation
  • Shin Splints

The number one preventative is to warm up before a workout or a game and also cool down afterward.

Stretch: 2 to 3 days a week minimum of stretching will keep your body limber and loose. To stretch properly make sure to do at least 3 repetitions of each holding for 10 to 20 seconds. You should feel a mild stretch, not a strain.

Play by the rules:

Especially important if you play a contact sport. Rules of conduct are enforced to keep athletes healthy. Follow them.

Wear the right gear:

Pads, helmets, gloves, mouth guards and other gear. Well-fitting equipment can protect your eyes, knees, hands, teeth, and head.

Avoid playing when exhausted. Athletes who push and train daily are more likely to sustain an injury. Your body needs a break to heal and recuperate.

If you get hurt, stop:

No one is going to think less of you. Continuing to play or exercise can cause more harm taking you out of the game for longer or even permanently.

Recognize warning signs:

  • Joint Pain
  • Tenderness at a Specific Point
  • Swelling
  • Reduced Range of Motion
  • Comparative Weakness
  • Numbness and Tingling

These are all signs of an injury. If you notice any of them please see your physician.

Treatment for Sports Injuries:

RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) method to relieve pain, reduce swelling and speed healing. That is the first step and should be done immediately.

Diagnosis is the next step. Chiropractic Sports Medicine requires no prescription medication or surgery, because of this many athletes prefer to try this first. Chiropractors work in conjunction with massage therapists to treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.
