Self Esteem and Illness

Feeling bad can take a toll on how you view and feel about yourself. If you are sick chances are you aren’t as active as you once were. That can lead to weight gain or loss as well as loss in tone of muscle. Along with that comes lack of energy, motivation, and ability to participate fully in life.

Disease and illness often leads to depression. This spills over into the arena of self-esteem. You may start to feel not so great about yourself, though your condition isn’t fully in your control and most certainly not your fault.

It is important not to lose sight of who you are. You aren’t just your body. You are a mind and a soul. You are a complete package. You are still you. The only constant in life is change and even this, as bad as whatever you are experiencing may seem, will pass too.

It’s important, along with treatments, to do things that make you happy, things that make you feel good. Get a massage, go for a walk in nature, if a walk is too much, sit outside, whatever you can do. Breathe in the fresh air, talk to a friend, watch a funny movie, keep your spirits up.
