What is a Pinched Nerve?
Our nerves are our electrical wiring. They deliver signals from the brain to all organs and areas of the body. Our nerves are our body’s way of communicating within itself.
The most common cause of a pinched nerve is excessive pressure applied to a nerve by bones, cartilage, muscles, or tendons. That pressure causes inflammation which disrupts the normal function. Weakness, pain, tingling, and numbness are the results of this.
Nerve damage happens when that pressure is not relieved and the misalignment is not corrected. Pressure over time equals damage.
Pinched nerves can happen any time, in any position, including just sleeping or even bending or twisting.
Signs of a Pinched Nerve
- Radiating pain
- Radicular pain
- Sharp, aching, or burning pain in the air of compression
- Loss of muscle strength
- Decreased sensation or numbness on the area supplied by the nerve
- The sensation that a foot or hand has “fallen asleep” producing pins and needles
Chiropractic Care for Pinched Nerves
With chiropractic, treatment doesn’t just focus on relieving symptoms, it looks for the root cause of the problem. Chiropractic treats the symptoms as well as the underlying problems. Allowing you to feel better more permanently.
Treatment for pinched nerves may include not only spinal manipulations but also decompression therapy (traction) which creates negative pressure on discs opening up facet joints and capsules, relieving pressure. Intersegmental traction, exercise and stretching, and along with that anti-inflammatory such as turmeric or bromelain may do wonders.
Medications such as Nsaid’s, oral steroids, and pain medications may also be employed temporarily till symptoms subside. Surgery is in some cases possible but should be the last resort.
