Many of us these days work on a computer every day – all day.
It is a lot of wear and tear on our hands, fingers, wrists, and arms, not to mention shoulders, neck, back… heck, your entire body. Sitting all day in one position is just flat out bad for you. Stand up, take breaks, stretch – hourly if possible. This includes your hands, wrists, and fingers which are very often overlooked.
These repetitive motions of the hand and wrist can lead to what’s known as carpal tunnel syndrome. The repetition can create stress-induced inflammation in the wrist which is painful. It puts pressure on nerves causing tingling, numbness, and weakness. The pain can become worse at night and make sleep difficult. It is your body’s way of screaming “please stop doing that over and over again!” The problem becomes that we simply can’t just stop. We are often paid because we do these motions. If we stop, our lively hood suffers and so will our quality of life.
So what’s the answer?
Traditional medicine says that the answer is taking painkillers and wearing a wrist brace. If the pain becomes too much or movement is to restricted a carpal tunnel release surgery can also be performed. The surgery, however, is not a guaranteed fix and carries risks.
The good news is that chiropractic is having much success in reducing carpal tunnel pain by utilizing targeted trigger point therapy. Trigger point therapy is used to apply deep pressure on the affected area allowing it to release the constriction which often refers out to more than one area of the body. Release the point = release the pain.
After a 5 week course of chiropractic treatment, an average of 67% of patients in a recent study reported marked improvement in pain levels and range of movement. It does indeed seem that this targeted non-invasive therapy is an effective way to manage if not solve carpal tunnel issues.
