America has become a very stationary country. We work, for the most part, in offices sitting in front of a screen all day. Lunch breaks are short and often taken in office at our desks or in office in a break room. We have become sedentary. Lack of movement for 40+ hours a week added to going home to unwind which equals more sitting and laying down is catching up with us.
This lifestyle is causing back issues, health problems, and poor posture.
Obviously, if you work on a computer, you cant do all that much to alter your daily routine but there are some steps you can take to make it easier on your body and better for your spine.
Make Some Changes to Your Daily Routine
- Take the stairs rather than the elevator
- Take a walk for lunch or on break
- Get an adjustable height desk
- Stand and stretch
- Sit up straight – take note of your posture
- Walk around while talking on the phone to clients
Are you at a desk right now? Check your posture. Is your spine straight or are you hunched over?
What is the proper posture?
Sit back in your chair making sure that your back is well-supported. Your weight should be distributed evenly on both hips keeping both feet on the floor, legs uncrossed.
Make sure your desk, keyboard, mouse, and screen are all at a comfortable level.
Humans not designed to sit all day long every day. Movement on a regular basis important for our spines and for our eyesight. Constant screen time will wear on your eyes. You will be surprised how much better you feel within just a few days of doing this.
Get Some Exercise
Movement and raising your heart rate are good for your health. It is recommended that we do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic, physical activity throughout the week.
Put the devices down!
Once off of work, put down your phone for a while. Stop staring at a screen and look around you and really live. It’s great for your psychological health, your eyes, and your neck and back.
