Researchers recently set out to explain visually and scientifically just how well chiropractic works to help patients alleviate back pain. What they found was even more impressive than they expected.
Using MRI scan technology they were able to document the positive changes made in each patient’s health. Patients who experience chronic low back pain generally have restricted mobility and movement in the lower lumbar of the spine. This can lead to degeneration of the discs between the vertebrae as well as lesions and adhesions which can further aggravate and cause pain.
The hypothesis of the study was based on the idea that chiropractic adjustments when done regularly can increase the gap between the vertebrae. It breaks up adhesions as they form and doesn’t result in scar tissue. This allows the back to move more freely. Moving more freely equates to less pain and stiffness.
During the study, the patients who received chiropractic adjustments along with side posture positioning were scanned in an MRI immediately following the treatment session. In each patient, the gaps were markedly wider and their pain level was reported as being lower.
While it is of course not necessary to get MRI scans post treatment this was an interesting look inside of the human body which confirmed what patients reported feeling.
