Correcting desk posture can make for a happier work day

You’ve been sitting at work for hours, and the longer you sit there in front of the computer, the worse your lower back, and neck aches. You find yourself slouching frequently. It’s hard to get comfortable.

What’s wrong with this picture?

Chances are, you’re not sitting properly, and your workstation isn’t optimized to keep your body comfortable and correctly postured. By applying a few ergonomic strategies, it’s possible to eliminate discomfort and even boost productivity.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Seat height. Adjust your seat height so that your feet are flat on the floor and your knees are on the same level as your hips. Your legs should be bent at about a 90-degree angle.

Seat angle. Adjust the back of your chair so that your back is reclining ever-so-slightly, at about 100 degrees from your seat. If your lower back doesn’t feel supported, try using a pillow. If your armrests feel like they’re in the way or pushing up your shoulders, remove them.

Position your keyboard correctly. Center the keyboard directly in front of your body, and adjust its height so that your shoulders are relaxed and your elbows are open. Your forearms, wrists, and hands should be positioned straight over the keyboard. Rest your palms on the desk between keystrokes, not while typing.

Position the monitor so that your neck is relaxed. Center the monitor directly in front of you above the keyboard, and sit about an arm’s length away. The top of the monitor should be several inches above seated eye level.

Take frequent breaks. Don’t be afraid to stand up and walk around the office regularly to keep blood flowing through the legs. If your eyes start to feel fatigued, periodically look away from the monitor and re-focus them.
